Where & Wear House of MODA
With MODA’s annual Spring Fashion Show coming up, you might be wondering what on earth you could wear that would be both fashionable and weather-appropriate. With Spring/ Summer 2015 (SS15) and Fashion Week 2015 (FW15) finished and new styles out, there is plenty of inspiration going around to create the perfect outfit.
First, ditch the heavy down jackets (they’re too bulky for a spring fashion show) and opt for a bold--but insulating-- long coat (read: Max Mara). Once you have your coat, take inspiration from these select shows:
Calvin Klein SS15 at NYFW gives us the shapes and forms perfect for early spring. The looks from this collection presented a casual but sophisticated style. With the long clean dresses and popping color blocks, Francisco Costa’s collection allowed for the body’s natural form to flow into long ribbed knits. Underneath the maxi dress or sweater with a maxi skirt, fight the cold with hidden layers of leggings and enduring leather boots.
Topshop Unique and Preen LFW FW15 are really where the inspiration lies if you want to get creative. Topshop’s faux fur coats paired with warm turtlenecks and skirts of varying lengths captured the essence of embracing the cold without sacrificing style. With fresh colors and the occasional wildflower motif under the thick coats, Topshop welcomes spring with a hint of irony.
At Preen, we saw the mix of cross-stitches and patchwork filled with flowers. A favourite look was the beige cropped sweater paired with a waist-cinching patchwork skirt in earthy tones. The cropped sweater-wool skirt combo was paired with black and grey opaque tights, a must for any leg-baring outfit in the Midwestern early spring. Preen completed the look up with casual yet chic lace-up booties.
But don’t just imitate the runway looks. Combine the ornate top with a simple black skirt or vice versa. Play with color and form. And remember, fashion show outfits are all about staying casual with a pop of elegance and chic. Let the runway do the flair and grandeur, but make sure you complement the creativity exploding in Union Station.
Lastly, the two most important rules of any fashion event: go for comfort and show your personal style in your statement outfit.
