Between the late nights in Ex Libris and early mornings in Cobb, coffee sometimes feels like just the UChicago student’s equivalent to gatorade; a fuel to keep you going. But coffee can be much more than that. It’s something to bond over, relax with, and last, but certainly not least, something to enjoy.
Next time you’re looking for a new place to study or hangout, don’t hesitate to try these 5 coffee shops off-campus!
5. Robust Coffee Lounge – Woodlawn
6300 S Woodlawn Ave
Only three blocks away from South, this coffee shop is perfect for a quick retreat from campus. While their coffee is not as good as some of the others on this list, they make up for it with their selection of tastey sandwiches. Next time you’re on your way to the green line, take a moment to check this coffee shop out. (Image from TimeOut)
4. Bridgeport Coffee Company – Bridgeport
3101 S Morgan St
This cozy not-so-little coffee shop in the center of Bridgeport is perfect place to do some sunday afternoon lounging. Nestled in what used to be a pharmacy, Bridgeport Coffee Co. has the atmosphere of small town coffee shop. They have great coffee, most of which is sourced from Latin America, and friendly baristas. They just opened a location in Hyde Park, at the corner of 51st and Cornell below the Hyde Park Arts Center, but the we like original Bridgeport location better. (Image from Josh Koonce)
3. Asado Cafe – Lakeview
1432 W Irving Park Rd
This unassuming coffee is shop is a little out of the way, but it’s definitely worth the schlep. I happened upon this coffeeshop after a Art History class field trip to a post office and instantly fell in love. They micro-roast their beans in-house and the owner has that rambly, overeager way of speaking that coffeeshop-owners should have. (Image from the Chicago Reader)
2. Ipsento Coffee – Bucktown
2035 N Western Ave
If you’re looking for adventure, this is your spot. They make some of this City’s best lattes and have consistently blow me away with their coffee. Their namesake drink, the Ipsento latte, combines the flavours of coconut milk, cayenne, and honey for a unique if not delicious coffee experience.
1. La Colombe – West Loop
955 W Randolph St
Just off the Morgan stop on the green line this is one of my favourite places in Chicago. From the beautiful wood chairs and tables to coffee roaster in the back of the shop, this place just feels cool. They have some of the freshest roasted coffee in Chicago and their Gibraltar, an espresso cut with a small amount of warm milk, is to die for! You won’t find cds, tee-shirts or even a menu when you go in, they feel like those detract from the barista-coffee-customer experience. (Image from The Shot)
