Ariya Sasaki is an aspiring fashion designer. Born in Kyoto, Japan and raised in Berkeley, she is currently a student in the Geographical Studies department at the University of Chicago. During her time at the University she has been actively involved in MODA, the fashion organization on campus. This year as the Artistic Director of MODA she overlooked the Designer Boot Camp program and the MODA magazine, as well as organizing the annual Spring fashion show at the Chicago Cultural Center. Ariya Sasaki is also the Co-Founder and Director of the JAPAN Relief & Rebuild committee. The Spring/Summer collection has taken inspiration from the recent earthquake and tsunami disaster that took place in Japan on March 11th.
Her design aesthetic is romantic with an edge, reminiscent of designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Limi Feu, and comme des garcons. She believes that women can be transformed and feel empowered through fashion, and that fashion is an outlet not only for creativity but also for self exploration. One of her role models is Safia Minney, the founder of People Tree, a sustainable fashion and life style label. Ariya Sasaki hopes to pursue a career in the fair trade fashion industry creating garments that are both beautiful and sustainable.
